Talla Sylla urges President Faye to dissolve National Assembly by December 2026
Former Thi猫s mayor and ex-parliamentarian Talla Sylla has sent an open letter to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, advocating for the dissolution of the National Assembly by December 2026. Sylla's proposal aligns with the earliest constitutional window for such a decision, as Senegalese law prohibits dissolution within two years of legislative elections. The most recent legislative elections were held in November 2024, following early elections that secured a comfortable majority for the ruling Pastef coalition. Therefore, dissolution would become legally possible from November 2026. Beyond dissolution, Sylla's letter also calls for broad consultations involving political parties, civil society organizations, religious authorities, and economic stakeholders. This suggestion for wider dialogue follows similar recent discussions, including President Diomaye Faye's request to the Constitutional Council in July to explore combining legislative and local elections. Additionally, Professor Di茅gane S猫ne, president of the Union for Democratic Renewal, previously described the dissolution of the Assembly as "inevitable" and urged the formation of a broad coalition supporting the head of state.
