Gunmen kill police officer, two civilians in Sokoto, burn security vehicles

The attack, which occurred on Monday, also involved the rustling of an unspecified number of cattle and the burning of two security vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps. Residents reported that heavily armed attackers opened fire indiscriminately, forcing many to flee. Among the deceased were police officer Hussaini Manyu, an elderly resident Bala Wakili, and a young herder.

A farmer sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment. Community sources also alleged that a married woman was assaulted after resisting an attempted sexual assault. A community leader described the incident as one of the worst in the area recently, and residents appealed to the Federal and Sokoto State Governments for increased security.

DSP Ahmed Rufai, spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, confirmed the incident, the death of one officer, and the destruction of two vehicles, stating that operatives engaged and repelled the attackers. He added that security operations have been intensified.
