Ghana's Health Minister calls for stronger public-private partnership to address rising cancer burden

Speaking at the 45th Annual General Meeting of the Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners in Ho, Akandoh described cancer as a critical public health challenge, noting its global impact on health systems, economies, and families. He cited global statistics indicating 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer deaths in 2022, with low and middle-income countries projected to see the largest increases. Ghana recorded approximately 27,260 new cancer cases and 17,662 cancer-related deaths in 2024, with breast, cervical, liver, prostate, and ovarian cancers being the most prevalent.

The Minister highlighted that cancer is a significant social and economic challenge due to the high costs of diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care, advocating for a comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable response. He mentioned government policies like the National Health Policy and the Universal Health Coverage Roadmap, and revealed the Ministry of Health is reviewing the National Cancer Strategy to align with new evidence and best practices.
