Unity Party members petition investigative bodies over $1 million extortion allegations against Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin
Solomon Owusu, Director of Communications and Spokesperson of the United Party, and Andrew Appiah-Danquah, Director of Legal and Constitutional Affairs of the party, have petitioned six investigative bodies to probe allegations of extortion against Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin. The petition follows claims by Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, that Afenyo-Markin demanded $1 million. Owusu and Appiah-Danquah stated that an investigation is necessary due to the seriousness of the allegation and to uphold accountability and combat corruption, citing Article 218 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. Sammy Gyamfi, speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile, defended his use of the term “extortionist” against Afenyo-Markin, indicating that his comments were based on undisclosed underlying issues between them. He noted that he has not used such a term against other critics, suggesting the specific nature of his dispute with the Effutu MP.
