Ghana to transition to solar-powered streetlights nationwide

This initiative aims to enhance the reliability of public lighting and decrease reliance on the national electricity grid. The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, stated that solar units operate independently, ensuring other lights remain functional even if one unit is damaged or during power outages. He confirmed that solar-powered systems will be prioritized for all new road projects and streetlight replacements.

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, will lead this nationwide transition. Agbodza also clarified that recent traffic light failures on the Accra-Tema Motorway were due to stolen underground cables, not issues with the Electricity Company of Ghana ECG. The government will engage a new contractor to rewire the system.

This shift to solar is expected to create a more resilient public lighting infrastructure.
