Ghana minister-designate proposes crop-based packaging to combat plastic waste

During her vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings suggested supporting the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research CSIR to develop biodegradable plastic alternatives from local crops like cassava and hemp. She emphasized Ghana's abundant plant resources could produce environmentally friendly materials that break down naturally. Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings stressed that addressing plastic waste requires a coordinated approach involving government institutions, communities, and the private sector.

She also called for stronger measures to prevent hazardous waste and toxic chemicals from contaminating soil and water bodies, advocating for improved landfill standards with non-permeable bases. Additionally, she proposed waste segregation at household, school, and community levels to support recycling and compost production, and exploring technologies to convert waste into energy and other useful products. These measures, combined with public education and stronger enforcement, are intended to provide a comprehensive response to Ghana's growing plastic waste challenge.
