National Assembly fails to reach quorum for ECN chairperson nomination
The nomination of Gerson Sindano as chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia ECN was delayed after the National Assembly failed to achieve the necessary quorum for a decision. On Tuesday, only 45 Members of Parliament MPs supported the nomination, falling short of the 49 votes required. This deadlock follows opposition MPs walking out of the chamber in protest against Sindano鈥檚 nomination, a stance they have maintained since June. Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila stated that without the required decision-making quorum, the matter would need to be revisited. Justice and labour relations minister Fillemon Wise Immanuel criticized the opposition's walkout, calling it a "mischievous" tactic that undermines the voting process and could frustrate legislative progress. However, deputy speaker Phillipus Katamelo defended the MPs' right to leave the chamber, noting that assembly rules do not prevent it. MPs Marius Sheya and Willem Amutenya suggested that proceedings should be adjourned until the next day when a quorum is not met, a point clarified by Kuugongelwa-Amadhila as applicable only to matters requiring a decision-making quorum.
