GAUA strike threatens to paralyze Ghana's public universities

Charles Kojo Aidoo, GAUA General Secretary, stated that the industrial action will lead to a halt in essential administrative functions, including salary and payment processing, student admissions, and the approval of promotions and appointments. The strike will also affect professional services, as engineers, architects, lawyers, and medical doctors affiliated with GAUA will withdraw their services. Mr. Aidoo highlighted that GAUA members perform critical roles in the daily functioning of universities.

The strike stems from GAUA's long-standing concerns regarding remuneration disparities between teaching and non-teaching staff. GAUA argues that the current pay structure does not adequately recognize the qualifications, experience, and responsibilities of non-teaching professionals, citing a market premium disparity where assistant lecturers receive approximately GH¢7,400, while university registrars and directors of finance receive around GH¢6,000. GAUA is demanding a review of this situation.
