Frederick Kumi, known as Abu Trica, waives right to speedy trial in $8 million romance fraud case

Kumi appeared before Judge John Adams on August 25, 2026, with prosecutors and his new defense lawyer. The judge classified the case as complex, indicating that the evidence and legal issues require more preparation time for both the prosecution and defense.

By waiving his right to a speedy trial, Kumi has given up his right to have the case heard within the normal timeframe under US speedy trial rules. No plea deadline or trial date was set during the hearing. The next court hearing is scheduled for November 3, 2026, and Kumi is expected to remain in custody until then.

Kumi, who was extradited from Ghana in July, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to an alleged romance fraud scheme targeting elderly Americans. US prosecutors allege that Kumi and others defrauded over 80 elderly victims of more than US$8 million, using online platforms and fictitious identities. Kumi faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, which could lead to up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted.
