Mauritius seeks India's expertise for energy transition, biofuel, and solar projects
Mauritius is seeking India's expertise to advance its energy transition goals, as discussed during a working session between Mauritian Minister of Energy Patrick Assirvaden and Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri Hardeep Singh Puri. The discussions focused on a biofuel project aimed at reducing Mauritius's dependence on coal and heavy fuel by 15%. Minister Assirvaden stated that a Memorandum of Understanding MoU was signed with India, recognizing its advanced technology in this sector. Mauritius has also requested India's support for the Tamarind Falls project, which involves installing solar panels starting next January. Additionally, Mauritius is looking for a feasibility study for a 500-megawatt LNG project at its port and assistance in acquiring 100,000 photovoltaic panels for residential installations. Minister Assirvaden noted that the residential solar project is already operational in Gujarat, and Minister Puri assured him he would discuss it with his Indian counterpart, the Minister of Energy. Assirvaden clarified that biofuel utilizes waste, straw, wood, and wood chips as resources to gradually replace coal. He emphasized that the agreement with India will allow Mauritius to benefit from India's advanced experience in developing biofuels and alternative fossil fuel solutions. Minister Assirvaden plans to visit New Delhi soon to further discussions and strengthen energy cooperation between the two nations.
