Federal Government launches 13.92MW solar mini-grid project in Yobe State

This project, implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency with support from the World Bank, aims to enhance electricity access, support businesses, and stimulate economic activities across five locations in Damaturu, Potiskum, Nguru, and Bade Local Government Areas. Key installations include a 1.76MWp solar plant in Damaturu, a 2.98MWp facility in Gashua, a 3.20MWp installation in Nguru, and two plants in Potiskum 3.20MWp at Yarimaram and 2.78MWp at Rugan Fulani. The initiative also involves installing 40 distribution transformers.

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, described it as one of Northern Nigeria's largest interconnected hybrid solar mini-grid investments, expected to provide reliable electricity to thousands of households, markets, schools, hospitals, agricultural enterprises, and small businesses. He noted the project's alignment with the state’s economic development agenda and efforts to diversify energy sources. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, Dr Abba Abubakar Aliyu, stated that these mini-grids are designed to integrate with existing distribution networks, reduce energy costs, and unlock economic opportunities.
