Housing Minister Shakeel Mohamed issues 14-day ultimatum for public access to Pointe-d'Esny coastline
Housing Minister Shakeel Mohamed has given hoteliers and camp owners 14 days to remove structures obstructing public access to the coastline in Pointe-d'Esny. This directive follows a visit by the Minister on Thursday, August 13. Mohamed emphasized that coastal access must remain free and open to the public, denouncing what he described as "incivility tolerated for too many years." He warned that authorities would resort to legal action if necessary, lamenting the long-standing inaction by officials. The Minister was accompanied by Ranjiv Woochit, Minister of Local Government, Kevin Lukeeram, Member of Parliament for Constituency No. 12 Mahébourg–Plaine-Magnien, along with members of the Police Force and the National Coast Guard. Representatives from the Beach Authority, the Grand-Port/Savanne District Council, and environmental activist Carina Gounden from the NGO Aret Kokin Nu Laplaz, as well as local representatives and officers from various relevant authorities, were also present during the visit.
