Algeria strengthens autism detection and support for children before the new school year
Algeria's Ministry of Health is implementing enhanced measures for children with autism spectrum disorder ASD ahead of the new school year. The initiative aims for early detection and comprehensive care, combining medical, educational, and social support. Health directorates in all wilayas have been instructed to reactivate their screening and follow-up units. Healthcare facilities are increasing specialized consultation points, and a census of available practitioners, particularly child psychiatrists in public structures, is underway to address consultation delays. This effort is supported by a large recruitment plan in the health sector, with over 24,000 positions opened in 2026. A national videoconference is scheduled for September 2, 2026, to standardize detection protocols and raise awareness among field teams, including school health coordinators and screening unit personnel. The care pathway emphasizes close collaboration between schools, families, and medical facilities. Teachers, parents, or associations can refer children to the nearest screening unit for an initial evaluation. If indicators are confirmed, children will be directed to a child psychiatry consultation within their wilaya or a neighboring one if local services are insufficient. The specialist will provide a definitive diagnosis and establish an individualized support plan, involving the Ministries of National Education and National Solidarity to adjust schooling conditions and activate specialized aid
