Experts urge Nigerian first-class graduates to focus on national development over overseas migration

This appeal was made at the close of the eighth annual M-First Series workshop in Lagos State, a three-day program that brought together 50 first-class graduates for career guidance, mentorship, and networking. Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, Chairman of the First Class Muslim Foundation, emphasized that these high achievers can thrive within Nigeria's economy. He stated that going abroad should be for gaining education, experience, and exposure, with the intention of returning to develop the country, rather than supporting the "japa syndrome."

Ogunmuyiwa also noted the increasing tightness of foreign labor markets. He clarified that a first-class degree does not limit graduates to academic roles, highlighting both academic and industrial career paths. The event featured prominent figures such as Ibrahim Abdul, Rector of Yaba College of Technology, and Nurudeen Olaleye, former Rector of Lagos State Polytechnic, who advised graduates on leadership and creating opportunities.

Mutiu Adelu, Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Controller at Baker Hughes, spoke on strategic execution, while Modupe Kadiri, Chief Financial Officer of MTN Nigeria, presented certificates and offered advice on navigating local professions.
