European wildfires: latest developments

In Spain, the Aragon region has deployed a record anti-fire effort, with French reinforcements expected, to contain a fire threatening the millennial San Juan de la Peña monasteries. This fire, which started on Monday, has spread across 16,600 hectares, leading to the evacuation of over 1,000 people. In Andalusia, authorities allowed hundreds to return home after a 10-day fire that ravaged over 25,000 hectares was brought under control.

Belgium is facing one of its worst fires in history, with nearly 3,000 hectares burned in a natural park. The country is receiving aerial support from the Netherlands, with more expected from the Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany, and Norway. In Croatia, four individuals have been arrested on suspicion of starting some of the devastating fires along the Adriatic coast, where a severe fire in the Omis region resulted in one death and around 40 injuries.

France's Landes region sees a stable situation after a fire consumed 1,700 hectares, with firefighters now focusing on ground attacks. In Greece, a fire continues to rage on the Aegean island of Skyros, with over a hundred firefighters, 11 planes, 5 helicopters, and 20 ground vehicles deployed.
