Yomif Kejelcha sets new half marathon world record in Buenos Aires
Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha established a new men's half marathon world record on August 23, completing the Media Maratรณn Ciudad de Buenos Aires in 56 minutes and 51 seconds. This achievement makes the 29-year-old the first athlete to officially break the 57-minute barrier in a record-eligible race. Kejelcha improved upon the previous pending record of 57:20, set by Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo in March, by 29 seconds. He expressed confidence during the race, stating, "I felt strong from the middle of the race and knew the record was within reach." This marks Kejelcha's return to holding the global record, having previously set a 57:30 mark in Valencia in October 2024 before Kiplimo's temporary surpassing. Kejelcha maintained a strong pace, reaching the 15-kilometer mark in 40:41 before securing a solo victory. This record-breaking performance follows a successful period for Kejelcha, who also holds the world 10K record and ran a sub-two-hour marathon in London earlier this year.
