
Ethiopian company Breakthrough Trading SC faces scrutiny over unaccredited training and business model
Breakthrough Trading SC, led by an outgoing Member of Parliament, claims to have trained over 100,000 individuals in personal development, promising success and wealth. However, Ethiopia鈥檚 Education and Training Authority ETA states that Breakthrough's programs are not licensed or accredited. Former participants, like Wondesen Ayalew, report paying significant fees for training and then being encouraged to recruit others to earn commissions, leading some to question if the model resembles a pyramid scheme. While CEO Milkias Ayele maintains Breakthrough operates a legitimate multi-level marketing model and possesses a general business license, he admits the training programs are not registered with ETA. The company's methodology, which includes references to Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnotherapy in documents, is contradicted by the CEO's statement that they do not provide such training. Discrepancies also exist in the company's stated initial capital. Breakthrough offers various training packages, costing up to 52,000 Birr, after which participants can become "independent business owners" IBOs and earn commissions from recruiting new trainees. Incentives include cars and substantial honorary commissions. Ethiopia's Trade Competition and Consumers Protection Proclamation prohibits pyramid schemes, defined by reward structures based on recruitment and financial contributions.
