Ethiopian health institutions struggle to meet national standards, survey reveals significant compliance drop

The assessment, which covered 2,701 institutions including over 2,000 private facilities, evaluated adherence to the Ethiopian Health Institutions Standard. Officials attribute some of the decline to a stricter assessment framework that now includes clinical outcomes, digital health record integration, patient safety, and continuous quality audits, moving beyond basic infrastructure. Only 21 of 565 government-run primary health centers fully complied, with nearly two-thirds in the "red" category for low compliance.

While private institutions showed higher compliance rates than government centers, 369 of nearly 900 privately-owned primary clinics and 34 percent of 784 medium clinics were also labeled red. The survey also highlighted service gaps in hospitals, with only a minority offering specialized services like cardiac, neurology, gastroenterology, otorhinolaryngology, oncology, renal, and rehabilitation services, and only two hospitals providing nuclear medicine.
