Ghana's Minister of Lands and Natural Resources declares end to impunity for illegal miners
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Ghana's Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, announced that the era of impunity for illegal mining, known as galamsey, is over. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, he stated that the government would pursue all individuals, financiers, and criminal syndicates involved in environmental destruction. Buah emphasized that the law would be applied without fear or favor, holding accountable those who profit from environmental degradation, regardless of their status. He stressed that the fight against illegal mining is a national responsibility requiring the active participation of all Ghanaians. The Minister called upon traditional authorities, religious leaders, licensed miners, security agencies, media organizations, local communities, and citizens to support efforts to protect the country's natural resources. He urged unity in safeguarding Ghana's environment, quoting Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to highlight the need for national solidarity. Buah reaffirmed the government's commitment to the anti-galamsey campaign, stating that they would not abandon the fight despite challenges. He expressed optimism that with sustained national support, Ghana would reclaim polluted rivers, restore degraded forests, protect mineral resources, and secure a greener future.
