Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital rehabilitation project faces dispute over ownership and accountability
A fundraising initiative launched by the Asantehene, the Heal Komfo Anokye Project HeKAP, aimed at rehabilitating the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital KATH, is embroiled in a dispute regarding its ownership, governance, and accountability. Launched in November 2023 with a goal of raising $10 million, the project has collected tens of millions of Ghana cedis from various sources. Approximately GH垄50 million has been spent, with about GH垄13 million outstanding to contractors, which the HeKAP committee is yet to validate. When KATH鈥檚 board and management sought accountability and to take over the project, the HeKAP chairman stated they lacked the authority. Investigations and an audit have revealed irregularities, including procurement lapses, missing pages in donor receipt books, and a dispute over the project's ownership. The Heal Komfo Anokye Hospital Foundation HeKAF, which manages donations and implementation, was incorporated as a private company in March 2024, four months after the project's launch. Its directors, Samuel Adu Boakye and Kojo Darko Asante, have no formal link to KATH and were not authorized by the hospital to run the project or receive donations.
