El-Sisi and Meloni discuss US-Iran ceasefire, Hormuz Strait reopening, and Lebanon attacks

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a phone conversation on April 10, 2026, to discuss the recent US-Iran ceasefire, developments concerning the Strait of Hormuz, and Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Both leaders emphasized the importance of preserving stability in the Middle East. El-Sisi called for building on the ceasefire agreement to ensure regional peace and stability and to initiate negotiations to resolve outstanding issues, highlighting Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate tensions. He also reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the security of Arab states. Meloni appreciated Egypt’s efforts in consolidating the ceasefire and stressed the need for successful US-Iran negotiations in Islamabad to achieve a final agreement. She also underscored the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz for international navigation without fees, ensuring the security of Gulf states, and reaching an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program with guarantees. Regarding Lebanon, Meloni expressed Italy's desire for direct negotiations leading to a ceasefire, noting that Hezbollah had made incorrect choices and the Israeli response exceeded legitimate self-defense. The leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral relations between Egypt and Italy, particularly in trade and economic sectors, and cooperation in combating irregular migration.
