Egypt registers new seedless, thornless lemon variety
Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation has registered a new lemon variety called "Egypt 25" Citrus aurantium. This new variety features seedless fruits and thornless trees, which is expected to facilitate harvesting and reduce losses. The Horticulture Research Institute of the Agricultural Research Center announced the registration, aligning with directives from Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk to promote agricultural innovation. Dr. Ahmed Helmy, Director of the Horticulture Research Institute, noted that its established growth habit makes it suitable for intensive farming systems, potentially increasing the number of trees per unit of land. The registration is seen as an opportunity to attract investment, enhance the value of Egyptian agricultural products, and boost farmers' incomes. Dr. Walid Abu Batta, head of the research program, stated that this initiative supports agricultural scientific research and the preservation of distinctive plant varieties, maximizing the use of Egypt’s agricultural resources. Seedless lemons are attractive to consumers for direct use in juices and food processing.
