National Library in Windhoek to host event commemorating Dambudzo Marechera's literary legacy

Organized by Indie Network Namibia and Africa Blossom Publishers Concept Note, the event marks the 39th anniversary of his death and aims to reflect on African literature. Marechera, who challenged literary conventions and questioned political orthodoxies, won the Guardian Prize for First Fiction in 1979. Journalist Kelvin Chiringa will give a keynote presentation, describing Marechera as a consequential literary figure who reimagined the African novel and brought fresh ideas to poetry and short stories.

Chiringa notes Marechera's writing posed difficult questions from a position of radical doubt, building foundations for protest literature and leading to conflict with Zimbabwe's censorship board. Marechera refused to be identified solely as an "African writer," seeking to dismantle the concept of "othering" intellectual contributions. The event will also include readings from Marechera's works and a panel discussion featuring professor Collen Sabao, writer Rémy Ngamije, and professor Nelson Mlambo.

Samuel Mayinoti of Blossom Publishing believes the event will stimulate conversations about Marechera's legacy and the trajectory of African literature, aligning with Namibia's recognition of creative industries for national development.
