Egypt's Foreign Minister congratulates new OIC Secretary-General, discusses regional issues
Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, held a telephone call on August 28 with Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the newly appointed Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation OIC. Minister Abdelatty congratulated Mr. Ahmed on his appointment, which was approved by OIC Member States on August 27, and expressed Egypt's appreciation for his diplomatic experience. He affirmed Egypt's readiness to support the new Secretary-General in reforming and developing the OIC, and in enhancing its role and working mechanisms, offering Egyptian expertise. Mr. Ahmed, in turn, thanked the Foreign Minister for his congratulations and Egypt's support for his candidacy, emphasizing his commitment to close coordination with Egypt and benefiting from its expertise in supporting Islamic world issues. The call also covered prominent regional developments, including the Palestinian issue, and efforts to promote security, stability, and development in Islamic countries. Minister Abdelatty stressed the OIC's crucial role in protecting Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and preserving the city's identity. Both sides underscored the importance of maintaining the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, rejecting any measures that would undermine their religious and historical status or alter the city's character, and stressed the need to confront ongoing Israeli violations in Jerusalem.
