Egypt's Prime Minister joins Tanzanian President for Julius Nyerere Dam inauguration
Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, representing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, attended the inauguration of Tanzania鈥檚 Julius Nyerere Dam and hydropower plant on August 22, 2026. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan also participated in the ceremony for the project, built by the Egyptian consortium of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric. Located on the Rufiji River, this is Tanzania鈥檚 largest hydropower project, with a total generating capacity of 2,115 megawatts from nine turbines. The dam, which is 1,036 meters long and 131 meters high, creates a reservoir of approximately 34 billion cubic meters. The project aims to strengthen Tanzania鈥檚 energy sector and support economic development, highlighting the strategic partnership between Egypt and Tanzania. The officials conducted an inspection tour of the power station building, the 400-kilovolt switchyard, and the main dam, before unveiling a commemorative plaque to officially inaugurate the facility.
