Egypt's headline inflation increases to 14.9% in July
Egypt's annual urban inflation rate rose to 14.9 percent in July, up from 14.3 percent in June, marking its first increase in three months. Data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics CAPMAS also showed that nationwide annual inflation accelerated to 13 percent in July, compared to 12.2 percent the previous month. The monthly nationwide consumer price index saw a 0.1 percent increase from June 2026 to 289.9 points. This annual rise was primarily driven by a 31.1 percent surge in housing and utility costs, with actual rents increasing by 28.1 percent and imputed rents by 50.9 percent. Other significant contributors included transport prices, which rose by 21.1 percent, and education costs, up by 20 percent. Furnishings, household equipment, and maintenance increased by 15.2 percent, while restaurants and hotels saw a 13.3 percent rise, and clothing and footwear by 13 percent. Food and beverage prices were 7.9 percent higher year-on-year in July, with cereals and bread up 2.9 percent, meat and poultry 4 percent, and fish and seafood 4.4 percent.
