Veronica Adane discusses Ethiopian music's global potential and industry evolution

Ethiopian artist Veronica Adane, known for blending traditional Ethiopian sounds with modern production, believes the country's music has everything needed to reach a global audience. In an interview with The Reporter's Surafel Ashebir, Adane highlighted the industry's positive transformation, marked by a return to roots and reinterpretation of traditional sounds with contemporary genres. She emphasized the role of technology and digital platforms, particularly social media, in empowering new artists and increasing visibility. Adane, who recently won Artist of the Year Continental and Best Female Artist at the 2025 Zikomo Africa Awards and Best African Traditional at the 9th All Africa Music Awards AFRIMA in January 2026, stressed the importance of authenticity, staying grounded, and respecting culture. She expressed concern about AI's impact on human creativity and artist opportunities, advocating for AI to assist rather than replace human artistry. Adane also called for greater government support for Ethiopian artists, citing a lack of follow-through despite her international achievements. She is planning an upcoming tour across Ethiopia, including cities like Addis Ababa, Gondar, Bahir Dar, Asosa, Mizan Teferi, Arba Minch, and Hawassa, aiming to create an emotional and authentic experience for her audience.
