Senator John Methu links increased soda consumption to State House activity, criticizes Ruto administration
Senator John Methu recently commented on Kenya's rising soda consumption, suggesting it is due to what is served at State House, Nairobi. His remarks were a direct response to National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, who had previously cited increased soft-drink sales as evidence of Kenyans having more disposable income under the current government. Mbadi argued that purchasing non-essential items like soda indicated people had money left after covering basic needs and credited his team's economic interventions. However, Mbadi's statements drew criticism online, with many questioning the validity of using soda sales as a measure of economic well-being given the high cost of living. Methu stated, "Consumption of soda has only increased because of its consumption in State House, Nairobi. This is what President William Ruto feeds his delegations." He framed the broader political discussion as the government being asked to account to Kenyans for its time in office.
