Concerns rise over artificial food seasonings and cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria

Many households and food vendors rely on these cheap flavor enhancers, which some medical professionals believe contribute to the increasing rates of hypertension, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases in the country. Cases shared by individuals highlight adverse reactions, including stomach upsets and erectile dysfunction, linked to the consumption of meals prepared with these artificial additives. Experts, including Professor Olufemi Fasanmade, a Consultant Endocrinologist at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, and Professor Jacob Awobusuyi, a consultant nephrologist, warn that these products can disrupt endocrine function, raise blood pressure, and potentially impact fertility and kidney health.

They note that many processed seasonings contain high levels of salt, sugar, and sometimes unknown substances that could be nephrotoxic. Findings indicate that artificial seasonings are readily available and often replace traditional, healthier spices like ogiri and iru, partly due to rising food prices and consumer demand for convenience. Some of these products are sold without proper National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC registration numbers, detailed ingredient lists, or manufacturer identification, making it difficult for consumers to assess their safety.
