Egypt's Ministry of Transport upgrades Nile River system to boost trade and tourism
Egypt's Ministry of Transport is implementing a comprehensive strategy to modernize the country's river transport system. This initiative aims to expand river transport's share in freight logistics and enhance Nile tourism. Key developments include dredging and bank stabilization on the Cairo–Alexandria Line, construction of new bridges and river berths, and clearing navigational bottlenecks on the Cairo–Aswan, Cairo–Damietta, and Cairo–Ismailia Lines. The Cairo–Aswan route now features the River Information System for vessel monitoring, including 170 floating hotels. Additionally, a new river port has been constructed to integrate with a planned Ministry of Supply grain silo. For regional connectivity, maintenance has been completed on the 350 km waterway between Egypt and Sudan, including buoy repairs and night-navigation beacons across Lake Nasser, and a new river pier is under construction at Sudan's Wadi Halfa Port to increase bilateral trade.
