Ghana Statistical Service reports 15% of girls aged 15-19 have experienced pregnancy
The Ghana Statistical Service GSS has revealed that 15% of Ghanaian girls aged 15 to 19 have been pregnant, with 11% having given birth, according to findings from the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. This information was shared in a statement for World Population Day, emphasizing the need for increased investment in youth health and development. Early pregnancy can disrupt education, limit skill development opportunities, and reduce long-term economic participation for young women. The GSS highlights that empowering young people through education, skills development, and employment is crucial for Ghana's progress. The country's youth, aged 15 to 35, constitute 36.9% of the projected population, presenting an opportunity for a demographic dividend if investments are made in education, skills, and health. However, the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the first three quarters of 2025 showed youth unemployment at 21.9%, nearly double the national average of 12.8%. Additionally, about 19.5% of young people in this age group were classified as Not in Education, Employment or Training NEET. The GSS stresses that sustained investment in technical education, stronger school-to-work pathways, entrepreneurship, and job creation in productive sectors is essential to harness the potential of Ghana's youth.
