Chadian opposition leader Succès Masra granted presidential pardon, faces political eligibility challenges

This pardon, signed on August 14, comes after Masra was sentenced on August 9, 2025, to 20 years in prison for "dissemination of hateful and xenophobic messages" and "complicity in murder." The charges stemmed from a 2023 audio message, the "Mandakao affair," linked to inter-communal clashes in May 2025 that resulted in at least 40 deaths. Masra had run against President Déby Itno in the presidential election, securing 18.54% of the vote against Déby Itno's 61%.

While the pardon grants Masra freedom, it does not erase his conviction or its legal consequences, meaning he remains ineligible for political office.
