
African civil society organizations back Macky Sall for UN Secretary-General
Civil society organizations from various African regions have launched a campaign supporting former Senegalese President Macky Sall's candidacy for United Nations Secretary-General. These organizations, which met in Cotonou, highlight his political and diplomatic experience and his vision for a multilateralism more representative of the African continent. The initiative, led by general coordinator Cyrille Nguiegang, aims to unite African civil society organizations around a candidacy presented as one of leadership based on peace, dialogue, and multilateralism. The movement is themed: "For African leadership in the service of peace, multilateralism, and the international community." Supporters emphasize Sall's experience at national, continental, and international levels, including his tenure as head of the African Union. They cite his involvement in diplomatic initiatives during the 2022 Ukraine war, particularly efforts concerning global food security and negotiations for resuming Black Sea grain exports, as evidence of his ability to engage with diverse actors and defend regional interests during international crises. The organizations also point to Sall's advocacy for global governance reform, including UN Security Council reform and greater African representation in international bodies, as well as his support for a permanent seat for the African Union in the G20.
