Ousmane Sonko attributes fuel price hike to external conditions and structural adjustment
Pastef leader Ousmane Sonko stated that the recent increase in fuel prices is a structural adjustment linked to external conditions. In an interview with private media, including WalfTV, Sonko explained that as head of government, he had previously refused reforms that would negatively impact the population. He believes this decision marks the beginning of a series of measures that could further burden citizens. Sonko, a former Prime Minister, emphasized that public affairs should be guided by compassion and the general interest, arguing that economic decisions should not solely be based on statistics or external partners' demands. He suggested that reducing taxes should have been prioritized before considering a price increase, noting that taxes constitute 40 to 50 percent of fuel prices in Senegal. Sonko claimed that Senegal has the highest fuel taxes in the sub-region. He also mentioned that before leaving the government, the President had assured him there would be no price increase, but current budgetary adjustments are affecting purchasing power. Additionally, Sonko stated that the Presidency has a fund of 7,956 billion CFA francs, which he believes exceeded 11 billion in 2024, raising concerns about its management.
