Canada clarifies work permit requirements for foreign nationals

Most foreign nationals require a valid work permit and must meet specific eligibility criteria before beginning employment. The clarification, shared by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC, aims to prevent visitors from mistakenly assuming that entry permission includes work authorization. A visitor visa or eTA allows entry as a visitor but is not an authorization to work.

Individuals intending to work should determine if a work permit is needed and if they qualify before accepting employment. Canada offers different types of work permits, including employer-specific work permits, which generally require a job offer and restrict the worker to specific conditions, and open work permits, which typically do not require a specific job offer and allow work for eligible employers. IRCC advises prospective applicants to identify the applicable permit type and provides options to apply from outside or inside Canada, or at a port of entry, with varying eligibility.

Applicants can use their IRCC account to check requirements, processing times, and application status. Canada's Job Bank also provides information on employment opportunities for foreign candidates. After obtaining a work permit, individuals may need to get a Social Insurance Number SIN, understand workplace rights, and comply with permit conditions.
