Federal Government prioritizes hepatitis B and C prevention to curb liver cancer
The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to prevent and detect liver cancer early by strengthening the prevention and control of hepatitis B and C, according to the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adekunle Salako. Speaking at the 5th Africa Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Cancer Consortium Conference in Abuja, Salako, represented by Prof. Musa Ali-Gonbe, Director of Clinical Services at the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, highlighted challenges in Nigeria's cancer response, including late presentation, inadequate diagnostic services, and high treatment costs. He stated that particular attention is being given to liver cancer through vaccination, screening, diagnosis, and treatment for hepatitis B and C. The government is also integrating cancer screening into primary healthcare and strengthening referral pathways. Salako emphasized the critical need for stronger collaboration among various stakeholders, sustainable financing, and political commitment to improve cancer outcomes. He also mentioned initiatives like the National Cancer Health Fund and the Cancer Access Partnership Programme to strengthen financial protection for patients.
