
Mam Cherno Jallow appointed Director General of GIABA for four-year term
Gambian financial economist Mam Cherno Jallow has been appointed as the new Director General of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa GIABA for a four-year term. His appointment was announced by the GIABA Secretariat on Monday, August 31, 2026. The decision was made by the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government during its 69th ordinary session on July 19, 2026, in Lungi, Sierra Leone. Jallow, 60, brings over three decades of experience in the public and private sectors, along with a strong understanding of West African community institutions. Born on July 10, 1966, in Banjul, Gambia, Jallow holds a Bachelor of Economics from the International Islamic University of Kuala Lumpur and an MBA in Banking and Finance from the African Center for Higher Studies in Management CESAG in Dakar. His career includes over 35 years in management, strategic planning, finance, and private sector promotion in Gambia and regional organizations. He has spent sixteen years within ECOWAS, serving as Head of Strategic Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation in the Office of the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission from January 2019 to December 2021. Prior to this, from October 2015 to January 2019, he led cooperation with emerging and developed markets at the ECOWAS Commission.
