Kaya, Burkina Faso, inaugurates new 25 MW thermal power plant
Kaya, Burkina Faso, has commissioned a new 25 MW thermal power plant, which began production on August 11, 2026. The Minister of Energy, Mines, and Quarries, Yacouba Zabré Gouba, officiated the launch. This new facility replaces Kaya's previous 2.5 MW thermal plant, which closed in 2006. The 25 MW plant features 28 engines, each with a unit power of 1000 kWm, and cost approximately 15 billion FCFA. This inauguration is part of a series of power plant launches, which started on July 21, 2026, with the commissioning of the Pabré thermal power plant by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean-Emmanuel Ouédraogo. The combined capacity of the plants in Pabré, Bobo-Dioulasso, Koudougou, and Kaya totals 126.4 MW. Minister Gouba stated that these projects demonstrate Burkina Faso's commitment to reducing energy vulnerability, increasing national production capacity, and building a more resilient energy system. He emphasized that these achievements reflect a political will to make energy a key driver of sovereignty, resilience, and endogenous development for Burkina Faso. The Kaya plant aims to boost national production, minimize supply interruptions, and provide more stable energy to industrial and commercial units in the Koulsé region. The minister also announced the upcoming commissioning of three additional power plants, with the total cost for all these energy infrastructures estimated at around 200 billion FCFA.
