Burkina Faso: Terrorist groups increasingly recruit minors to offset losses

The Burkina Information Agency AIB reported on Monday, August 24, 2026, that these children are hastily trained and used for various roles, including lookouts, spies, radio operators, or fighters. Armed groups exploit children's vulnerability, precarity, or fear, sometimes through deception or coercion, to enlist them. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims GSIM is noted as particularly active in this practice.

Children's young age allows them to move more easily in certain areas without immediately arousing suspicion. However, their living conditions are extremely difficult, with terrorist leaders struggling to provide adequate food and care. These children may also be abandoned during combat operations as leaders prioritize their own escape.

Burkinabe armed forces have rescued several minors during operations to dismantle terrorist bases. Some children, aged 10 to 14, have testified to the violence and harsh conditions they endured. The recruitment of minors highlights a critical child protection issue, and their recovery by combat forces allows for their safety and appropriate care.

This phenomenon underscores the need for increased vigilance from families and communities against terrorist recruitment strategies, making child protection an integral part of territorial reconquest and security.
