Sahel States Confederation praises Nigerien forces for thwarting Niamey mutiny
The Confederation of Sahel States AES reported a betrayal by a group of soldiers involved in destabilization efforts in Niamey on the night of August 28-29, 2026. These attempts included attacks on Air Base 101 and other sensitive sites in the city. The AES stated that the mutiny was contained and defeated due to the bravery and professionalism of loyalist republican forces. The Confederation reaffirmed its full support for Niger's institutions and its commitment to the country's sovereignty and peace. It also praised the loyalty, courage, and sense of duty of the Nigerien Defense and Security Forces for their role in restoring order. The AES reiterated its determination to preserve the unity, cohesion, and stability of the Confederation and urged the populations of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to remain vigilant against disinformation campaigns, manipulation of public opinion, and attempts at division that may accompany destabilization efforts.
