DR Congo Ebola outbreak: political, security, and humanitarian crises fuel health emergency

The country faces significant challenges due to ongoing political instability, security crises, and humanitarian issues, which complicate the health response. Since the 1994 Rwandan genocide, violence has escalated in eastern DRC, leading to the proliferation of armed groups and a persistent security and humanitarian crisis in the northern provinces. This environment has allowed the Ebola disease to spread, with the DRC holding the record for the most outbreaks and victims.

The current epidemic primarily affects health districts in six provinces: Bas-Uele, Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Tshopo. Ituri province is the epicenter, and cases linked to travel from the DRC have been reported in Uganda. Ten neighboring countries, including South Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Republic of Congo, Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, and Zambia, are at high risk of propagation.

The Africa CDC, a specialized center of the African Union, has identified this as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern PHEIC.
