Algeria's secondary schools face challenges with new computer science curriculum for 2026-2027 academic year
Algeria's Ministry of National Education is set to introduce computer science into the secondary school curriculum for the 2026-2027 academic year, a move aimed at integrating digital skills. The subject will be mandatory for all second-year secondary students and for third-year students in mathematics and engineering streams. However, significant challenges remain, including a lack of computer laboratories in many high schools, which could hinder practical instruction. There is also a shortage of specialized computer science teachers, potentially requiring the use of educators from other fields. Furthermore, the official textbook for the subject has not yet been made available, creating difficulties for teachers preparing their lessons. The absence of updated pedagogical maps for some high schools also complicates the precise definition of staffing needs and timetables. While the reform is seen as necessary to adapt to technological advancements, its success depends on addressing these issues related to infrastructure, qualified personnel, and educational resources before the new academic year begins.
