Botswana High Court dismisses LSB challenge against South African FMD expert's admission

Chief Justice Gaolapelwe Ketlogetswe of the High Court ruled that the LSB's challenge was "misconceived" and dismissed their urgent application with costs. The LSB had sought to rescind a July 30 order allowing Willis to practice in Botswana on an ad hoc basis. Willis was brought in to represent JS Beef Proprietary Limited and Primefast Proprietary Limited in a case against the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr Kobedi Segale, Minister of Lands and Agriculture Dr Edwin Dikoloti, and the Attorney General.

The core dispute involves the government's management of FMD, an issue the Chief Justice noted has significant public importance for Botswana's cattle industry, beef exports, and the broader economy. The LSB argued that Willis should not have been admitted without their proper opportunity to oppose, but Ketlogetswe rejected this, stating the LSB was notified as legally required and was not a necessary party to the application.
