Borno teachers face high stress and potential exit due to insecurity, report reveals

The report, released in Abuja, attributes this pressure to prolonged insecurity, displacement, and repeated disruptions to education in the North-East. Research conducted across Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere, and Konduga local government areas found that nearly half of schools in affected communities had temporarily closed due to conflict or insecurity, with some areas seeing a 37% decline in enrollment since 2020. Additionally, 65% of households had at least one child out of school, and the dropout rate was 23% higher for girls than boys.

The report also highlighted that 62% of schools lack disaster preparedness plans and that 47.1% of teachers reported inadequate training in the past year. Key drivers of the education crisis include insurgency, communal clashes, farmer-herder conflicts, climate-related disasters, and mass displacement, alongside severe teacher shortages and damaged infrastructure. Recommendations include improved teacher recruitment and deployment in high-risk areas, continuous psychosocial training for teachers, and increased investment in education in emergencies frameworks.
