Ghanaians in South Africa seek urgent evacuation amid renewed xenophobic attacks
Over 90% of Ghanaians residing in South Africa are urgently appealing to the Government of Ghana for immediate intervention and rescue due to renewed threats and violent attacks on foreign nationals. A Ghanaian resident, Agya Prince, also known as Kontonkyi, reported on Accra-based Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that nearly 99% of Ghanaians in South Africa are desperate to return home as the security situation deteriorates. He noted that Ghanaians and other African nationals are facing harassment, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation from South African security forces, including police, immigration officers, and fire service personnel. The volume of citizens wishing to leave is so high that air transport alone may be insufficient, prompting calls for maritime transport options. The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has advised Ghanaian citizens to remain indoors and keep their businesses closed. The Ghanaian government has initiated voluntary evacuation flights, but community members suggest additional sea transport will be necessary to accommodate everyone seeking refuge.
