Bill Gates warns of turbulent AI era and widespread job losses without adequate preparation
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has cautioned that the transition into the artificial intelligence era could be one of the most turbulent periods in human history, primarily due to insufficient government preparation for widespread job losses and other disruptions. In an essay titled “The turbulent AI era is here. The choices we make now are critical,” published on his Gates Notes website, he stated that AI could either reduce inequality or deepen the divide between the rich and poor, depending on societal responses. Gates highlighted that the world is not adequately preparing for these changes, noting that leaders, experts, and communities have yet to confront the scale of the disruption. He emphasized that AI's rapid deployment speed differentiates it from previous technological revolutions, as it runs on existing devices and adapts to natural language. Gates identified widespread job losses as a major risk, warning that many entry- and mid-level jobs could disappear permanently, with new jobs requiring skills that take years to acquire. He predicted that disruption would extend beyond technology-related occupations to areas like sales, customer support, software engineering, paralegal work, and eventually blue-collar jobs as robotics advance.
