Jatikay Centre urges focus on Sahel terror threat after Ghana's National Security Council reorganization
The Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building has welcomed the reorganization of Ghana's National Security Council Secretariat, including the appointment of Major General William Ayamdo Rtd. as Deputy National Security Coordinator for Operations. Adib Saani, Executive Director of the Jatikay Centre, stated that this restructuring offers an opportunity to enhance Ghana鈥檚 national security framework, improving intelligence coordination, operational effectiveness, accountability, and preventive measures. The Centre highlighted the growing threat of violent extremism and potential terrorist spillover from the Sahel as a critical concern for the new leadership, urging strengthened intelligence gathering, border surveillance, and regional cooperation. It also called for increased investment in the resilience of communities in northern Ghana vulnerable to extremism. Beyond external threats, the Jatikay Centre emphasized the need to address internal security risks such as chieftaincy, land, and communal disputes, noting hundreds of unresolved conflicts. The Centre further identified organized crime, illicit financial flows, money laundering, illegal gold trading, and cross-border criminal networks as areas requiring increased attention due to their potential to fuel corruption and destabilizing activities.
