Attacks against journalists in Tunisia surge to 22 in July, SNJT reports

This figure is up from 16 in June and represents the highest monthly total since the beginning of the year. The 22 documented attacks affected 14 men and 8 women working across 12 media outlets, including electronic sites, radio stations, television channels, and newspapers, in addition to six independent journalists. The most common types of attacks were prohibitions from working, with seven cases, followed by six cases of harassment or obstruction, four judicial prosecutions, two instances of incitement, two cases of information retention, and one physical assault.

Identified perpetrators included communication officers six incidents and security agents four incidents, as well as festival managements and social media users. The majority of incidents 20 out of 22 occurred in physical spaces, with Tunis accounting for 13 cases and Nabeul for seven. The report highlighted difficulties faced by journalists during summer festivals, citing a lack of transparency in accreditation, restrictions on movement, interference in work, and breaches of confidentiality.
