Ancient monastery remains unearthed in Egypt's Wadi El-Natrun, dating to 4th-6th centuries AD

An Egyptian archaeological mission, a joint effort between the Supreme Council of Antiquities and Cairo University's Faculty of Archaeology, has uncovered the remains of an ancient monastery in Wadi El-Natrun, Beheira Governorate. Dating back to the 4th-6th centuries AD, this discovery sheds light on early monastic life and architectural planning in a region significant for the emergence of monasticism. The mud brick structure spans approximately 2,000 square meters, featuring a central courtyard surrounded by architectural units including monks’ cells and service annexes with kitchens, ovens, and storage areas. Excavations also revealed burial sites containing human skeletal remains, believed to be those of monks. Architectural studies indicate the use of vaults and domes, with walls coated in white plaster and decorated with murals depicting crosses, palm trees, and other motifs. Coptic inscriptions bearing monks' names and religious texts were also found. Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, highlighted the discovery's importance for understanding monasticism's origins and enhancing Wadi El-Natrun's status as a global religious and cultural tourism destination.
