Amnesty Ghana and Gender Ministry discuss progress of Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill

The meeting, which included the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, and Amnesty International Ghana's Director, Hannah Osei, focused on the Bill's progress and potential collaborations to protect individuals affected by witchcraft accusations. Hannah Osei commended the Ministry's efforts in gender equality and social protection, reaffirming Amnesty International Ghana's support for the Bill's passage. She suggested reintroducing the legislation as a government-sponsored initiative to overcome previous enactment challenges.

The Bill aims to enhance legal protections for those accused of witchcraft and address practices leading to abuse and discrimination. Dr. Lartey welcomed the partnership, stating the Ministry's commitment to safeguarding vulnerable persons through stronger legal and policy measures. She confirmed that the Bill is advancing through the necessary processes, with proposed amendments to the Criminal Offences Act currently under review by the Attorney General's Department.

The Ministry plans to continue collaborating with stakeholders to protect the rights and welfare of affected individuals.
